PostHeaderIcon Does anyone know what is needed in order to begin a small business writing personalized books for children?

I have no idea about how to help my associate launch her business. If you know of some quality but affordable book printers, information about illustrators, software to begin creating at home, or anything relevant, please share. Thank you in advance.

It can be extremely expensive to publish books, especially if you are personalizing each one. The cost of printing is very high these days and most publishers will look to print en mass, thus making this route unsuitable for your associate’s needs. Her best bet is to research self publishing on the web for companies that print on demand. Because they are printed as they are sold these companies may allow for some personalization for each printing. Start with Lulu as they are one of the premier self-publishers. (www.lulu.com)

As for illustrators, she can go to Elance (www.elance.com), a website of freelancers that will bid on her project. She will be able to post the job that she wants performed (for free I believe) and people will bid on what they are willing to do the work for. Many bids are very inexpensive but you will get what you pay for. If she does not find a suitable bid she can try again or not, there is no commitment.

As for software, MS Word is probably the best bet for doing the layout. She can probably do 90% of the work here since it is a book. If publishers will not accept Word’s .doc format and require a PDF, she can download DoPDF for free (www.dopdf.com)

Hope this helps.

PostHeaderIcon I wish to establish an online business, but don’t understand how to approach the wholesaler?

Hi, I have done my MBA in marketing and have done a diploma course in Online marketing and web development. I have a regular job but I have this desire of establishing my own enterprise. I have pretty decent knowledge of online marketing and e-commerce. I wish to develop my own website/an online store. I have also zeroed in as to what products will suit my area. I have also worked upon the business plan. However, I don’t understand as to how I should approach the wholesale dealers? For example, I wish to sell DVDs of all genres. I also have a comprehensive list of players in this area who provide DVDs at wholesale rate. But, I don’t know how to approach them? Will a letter stating what I wish to do, what are my requirements and how the company be benefited be enough? How to look out for companies which provide such opportunities and companies which sell the products on a wholesale rate?? Please reply?? Any reply/suggestions will be highly appreciated?? If possible, please suggest any website/book on the subject too.. Thanx

I think you should start with a letter stating which are your requirements, and which is your business plan and see what response you get.

PostHeaderIcon How to open a business selling pre-owned books or cell phones?

I am looking for any information concerning either of these ideas. I am considering them both because there is not a lucrative business where I am located for neither of the two. Which of these would have a greater profit margin? Which one would be easiest to get inventory for? What licenses, authorization, or accreditations would I need? Thank you to anyone who can provide me with some form of information or lead to get information.
Also, I am located in Mississippi. I’m not sure but maybe that would affect some answers. Thanks in advance.

I am not familiar with the used book market, but the wireless business can be very profitable. Depends on how big your city is and how the coverage is in that area. Hard to believe that there is no wireless store in any city anymore. Find the service that the consumers that are in that area is most interested in and then contact that carrier.

You could call any retail store and ask for a contact in the ‘indirect’ channel. They usually require capital investment and a good credit history. Make sure you find a good location that is easy to find and has good visibility from a major road in the city. Stores that in bad locations struggle. It is worth the extra rent to get a good location.

One of my clients has a college textbook business and they do very well buying and selling college text books. So used college books can be a great business also if you are in a college town.

PostHeaderIcon Would it be ridiculous to triple major in economics, finance, and accounting? Minor in one?

I am a current sophomore torn between double majoring between finance/econ or finance/accounting. I want to be a cpa. When I was in highschool I wanted to be a economist, but decided it was to risky to shoot for because I have health problems, thus I do not want to end up teaching. I feel that accounting is great for job security and for not having to be up on my feet a lot, making it a good choice for someone basically gambling with health problems that are somewhat unpredictable. I think that it would be cool to be a financial analyst too because it sounds more interesting than just balancing the books. I just want to leave my options open. Even though job security means a lot to me,I also want to love what I do. I also want to get a degree where I am not forced into sales or being on my feet a lot, and I want to have the the opportunity to work for myself. I really want opportunity. I can’t be on my feet a lot, so I do not want to teach economics, for example. I have dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, and possibly undiagnosed chronic fatigue syndrome. It is hard for me to plan because the illness throws disturbing curve balls at times. I am a hard worker, however, and never give up, always seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I want a degree that gives me the option to be anything from a high paid accountant, financial analyst, to an investment banker (haha probably not possible). Any suggestions for what combination of majors for me to graduate with. I am also open to a masters degree.

Double major in Accounting and Economics. Everything you talk about suggests those two majors, and Finance is just something on the side for you. If you decide later to become a financial analyst, nobody is going to reject you because you majored in Accounting and Economics. In fact, as a finance professional, I’d probably like to see those two majors rather than a finance major anyway. Yes, try to take Accounting and Economics courses that seem to apply to Finance as much as possible, but don’t worry about majoring in it.
